Diary: Easter, Babysitting, & Vegetarianism - Red Lipstick RosieHow can Easter have come and gone already?! The year is flying by, as usual. I hope everyone had a lovely Easter, regardless of whether you celebrate it, or just enjoy the long bank holiday weekend! I’ve not been one to celebrate it much; when we were kids we did Easter egg hunts with our grandparents (which of course, we loved), and while I was at a religious primary school I took it all very seriously. These days we exchange chocolate, but that’s about it. As you get older, it becomes more about the long weekend anyway! I spent mine with family.

I had to babysit my two little cousins – who are utterly adorable – which was something I was a bit nervous about. There’s something a little unnerving about being completely responsible for someone else children; despite the fact that I’m 22 years old, a fully qualified adult (ha ha) who has lived away from home, being in charge of caring for 2 small children makes me feel like a highly under-qualified child. Of course it was fine, it was only for a few hours, and they are very sweet and play nicely, but that’s just another factor to worry about! Children are so inquisitive, their minds always active and seeking stimulation. When there are two of them, you have to find a way to entertain both without one feeling bored or neglected (hats of to parents, you do this full time!). I actually really enjoyed myself, it’s so lovely when a child looks to you for comfort or reassurance, or just wants you to share in something they’re interested in. 

We went up to my grandparents to do an Easter egg hunt, as my sister and I used to when we were younger, which was lovely, helping them out with their clues. A lot of my extended family on my dad’s side were there, as an early celebration for my aunt’s birthday (as well as Easter), so it was nice to see and catch up with everyone. And the little ones got to run around with my younger brothers and baby cousin, blowing bubbles and enjoying the sunshine together. I also got to see my mums family; we all sat around having takeout, and talking. It was lovely.

My mum cooked the most amazing roast dinner the other day. I’m sure everyone thinks their mums cook the best roast, but my mum really does do the best one! We had roast lamb, which is my most favourite. However, my boyfriend has recently become a vegetarian (for over a month now), and I think I’ll be joining him. He’s wanted to do it for a couple of years, and finally thought enough is enough. And I agree with his motives, it does seem wrong that we kill animals for food, and while once upon a time that was a means of survival, the worlds a different place. So my conscience can’t take it much longer. I don’t want to be one of those people that pushes their ideals onto other people, so I will not try to persuade anyone to do the same, and won’t judge people for continuing to eat meat. It’s a big thing to give up when it’s such a staple part of everyone’s diets. Luckily, there are so many alternatives like Quorn (which thankfully I actually like!), and I love vegetables anyway. So in the next few weeks, I’m going to cut meat out from my life. I’ve already started collecting recipes for it (a weird hobby of mine), and I’m actually looking forward to it. There will be things I’ll miss (like the aforementioned lamb – sadly no meatless alternative to that one)[EDIT: I have since discovered that you can in fact get lamb replacements, along with a whole host of other meat replacements I didn’t know about, from Quorn! Thanks to Motherhood IRL for the info!], but I can still have so much, meatless sausages, chicken (which is actually really good!), and mince. And I can still have my mums best roast dinner, just without the meat, and that’s not so bad.

I haven’t been feeling well for the past couple of weeks. I’ve mostly wanted to stay in bed all day and drink tea, cosy and safe. Sadly that’s not practical, nor very productive.

Last weekend I went to see my dad’s family; it was really nice, the weather was beautiful so we went to Lyme Regis for a walk along the beach and some ice cream. It was almost warm at times, with the sun shining down, however as it was the sea-front, naturally it was a bit windy. And the wind was like ice! Lyme Regis is beautiful, it’s one of my favourite beaches. If you’re ever in the area, I would recommend it. And as it was Mother’s Day last weekend too, my mum’s family all came up for a Sunday roast, which was lovely. 

 

I managed to set fire to my bedroom this week… Maybe that’s an exaggeration. A candle exploded on my chest-of-drawers, and set fire to it. I managed to run downstairs, grab a towel, run it under the tap and run back up and put the fire out. But my goodness did it scare me! I was shaking and crying, and nothing had really happened. It could have been so much worse though; I know you’re not supposed to leave candles unattended, and I didn’t, but if I’d left it even for a few minutes, it could have spread. It did worry me though, the candle was in a glass holder specifically for candles. I think the candle burnt too low and the glass got too hot. It’s frustrating because I adore candles, I like the scents and the light-affect, but now I’m wary of them.

The weather has been improving, spring is coming! I have very mixed feelings about the weather getting warmer, I don’t like being cold, and I don’t like the dead-looking trees. I love blue skies, and greenery, but I don’t fare well in the sun. I get too hot and dizzy very quickly, and burn so badly. As long as I’m warm enough, but not passing out, not burning, and able to see a pretty view then I’m pretty happy.

Seeing the sun out now, and seeing the leaves starting to bud on the trees makes me feel better. I need to go outside more, so I’m resolving to enjoy the beginnings of spring by going for a walk everyday. Even if it’s just down to the local park, or the shops, I should do it. Ross and I went on a lovely little walk up a big hill in town that has beautiful views of the whole town. It reminded me I like to go walking, as long as it results in a sit-down with a good view.

One of my boyfriends friends recently came back from a year of travelling around America, and this weekend he set up a mini exhibition at one of the local pubs of his photography from his time there. I personally knew almost no one that was going to be there (a socially awkward persons nightmare), but I’m really glad we did go. It was a nice relaxed evening in the beer-garden, Ross got to catch up with his old friends, and I got to laugh at their shared memories. Plus, the photography was truly phenomenal, really beautiful stuff, real and full of stories. I struggle in social situations, especially those where I don’t know anyone. Actually I struggle in most situations that involve other people. Negative interactions have reinforced my fears over time, and this event was a nice reminder that not all interactions have a negative outcome.

Diary: Bowling, Swimming & Anniversary

Diary: Bowling, Swimming, & AnniversaryI went ten-pin bowling with some of my family for the first time in years, and I’d forgotten how much fun it is! We’d booked about 2 hours worth, and it flew by. We started with the sides/barriers down (like proper grown-ups) but after about half an hour of repeated gutter-balls, we sheepishly asked for them to be put up (we’re a talented bunch). I didn’t think I would be very good, and I’m not, but I was nowhere near as bad as I thought I would be! I even got a spare on my first go! Surprisingly, my boyfriend was not great at bowling to start with (sorry sweetie), and he’s usually good at everything. By the end of the game he had got the hang of it, and was actually pretty good at getting strikes and spares, but at the start.. Oh my. I honestly thought he was going to accidentally kill someone, he was so aggressive with the ball! He even managed to get it jammed on the other side of the barrier in the gutter. It was quite something. It was such a good laugh though, I haven’t been bowling in so long, I didn’t remember what I’d been missing. So I think this is going to have to be a more frequent thing.

We went swimming too, which again I’m really not very good at (are you noticing a pattern? Bad at cycling, bad at bowling, bad at swimming). I can swim, I’m just not a strong swimmer. And I always swallow too much water which makes me feel really sick and bloated. But it was such good fun, we went to a pool that had a lot of slides and rapids and so on, so I mostly felt like I was halfway drowning, especially on the rapids. I actually wore the Rimmel Provocalips Lip Colour, and it honestly didn’t budge, despite the fact I spent half my time there underwater! (Full review here). I want to swim more, a few times a week maybe, as I need to do more for my fitness. 

I’ve been trying out more green tea this week, and I found gingerbread flavour! It’s so good! I was a bit worried because when I opened the box it smelt like sage stuffing (not exactly what you want in your tea), and the teabag smelt like strong ginger. But once it was stewing it smelt amazing, ginger and golden syrup. And it doesn’t taste too bad either, it’s a vast improvement on standard green tea. I also tried apple, which is bearable, but not as good as gingerbread. Either way, I’m going to stick to drinking it, as long as I keep finding flavours I like. I’ve also been trying to eat more vegetables and less meat this week. I made a pretty good pasta dish, which will be going into my recipe book (I get a little obsessed with collecting recipes).

My boyfriend and I also had our 4 year anniversary on Sunday, so we had a nice weekend together. We went shopping to treat ourselves to a few little pieces, as we don’t really go shopping often, and then we went to Nandos. Nandos is sort of a staple restaurant in our relationship. I introduced Ross to Nandos when we were first dating, and once we moved to London, it became a regular thing for us. Since we’ve come back to Devon, we haven’t eaten there so much. In London, they’re everywhere, but in there’s only two Nandos in the whole of Devon, and that’s pretty much it until you get to Bristol. So in a fit of tradition and nostalgia, that where we ate. On Sunday we went to Teignmouth – somewhere we used to go for walks when we were first dating – and played adventure golf. It was really nice, but so so cold and windy! So we ordered pizza when we got back. It was a simple and sweet weekend together. I’m very lucky.

Diary: Exercise, Pancakes & Valentines Day

Red Lipstick Rosie Diary: Exercise, Pancakes & Valentines DayMy mum made me exercise this week for the first time since I left college (back in June, oops). Let me start by saying that I despise exercise. It’s boring, it usually hurts, and I get all red-faced. It’s not a pretty sight! It was a 20 minute workout on Jillian Michaels: 30 Day Shred (get it here) at Level 1, so I suppose it wasn’t so bad. And I’m pleased to say I found it a little easier than expected, so perhaps I’ve retained what little fitness I gained from 3 years of exercise-filled training. That doesn’t mean we didn’t experience a serious case of jelly-legs afterwards though. I moaned and moped about having to do it, but I suppose a little exercise never hurt anyone. I just wish I enjoyed it and felt motivated to do it. But as my mum insists I do it, I suppose I had better complete the 30-day program.

It was also Pancake Day! I don’t know why I get so excited about Pancake Day when I could literally have them everyday, they’re not exactly hard to make. But somehow they seem like a treat, usually topped with lemon and sugar. However, this year I made savoury pancakes. And you know what? They were amazing. Like seriously amazing. And I know I must sound terribly pleased with myself, but really its my mums recipe. So I can thank her for it! Who would have thought bacon, cream, and veggies would make such a pleasing pancake filler? It’s definitely going to become a staple meal for my boyfriend and I, he loved it. Who are we kidding though, the real star of the show is always the sweet pancakes. Naturally for me this meant nutella, strawberries, and copious amounts of whipped cream. So satisfying, and so unhealthy (boo). Ah well, it’s only once a year, right?

I started drinking green tea this week. And…yuck. I don’t know what I really expected to be honest. I love normal tea, but as I drink it with copious amounts of milk and sugar, it’s not exactly good for me. I’m not even sure if regular (is it called black tea? I don’t know) has any health benefits, whereas green tea is considered one of the healthiest drinks out there (apparently). I love the smell of green-tea scented things, but in reality, green tea is not like that at all. First of all it kind of tastes like nothing, and then there’s a faint bitter taste, and then, the after-taste. Ughhh that after-taste. I don’t even know what it is or how to describe it, but its not pleasant. I also tried a mint flavoured one which really isn’t so bad (if you put a spoonful of sugar in it… I know, I’m hanging my head in shame). I’ll stick with it and see if there’s any improvement to my well-being.

And finally, Valentines Day! It was mine and my boyfriends fourth one together. We don’t do too much to celebrate it, as our anniversary is two weeks later, and we’d rather celebrate that. But I had a sweet and thoughtful card, and stunning red roses (my favourite!), and he actually cooked! And it was so so good. He doesn’t cook often (maybe 15-ish times since we’ve been together?!), but this was genuinely a wonderful meal, so now he has to cook at least once a week (unlucky Ross!), seeing as he’s secretly really good at it. Diary: Starting Out

Diary Starting Out Notebook PenI’ve always wanted a diary. I adore pretty notebooks, and writing in beautiful pens, I find it soothing to write things by hand. But I’m completely useless at committing to an actual diary. I start with the best of intentions, and then inevitably after a week of half-hearted attempts, it gets left in a drawer somewhere, forgotten. It was kind of pointless anyway, because I was always worried that someone would read it (not that there was ever anything interesting in there) so I was never completely honest about what I was feeling. And then I would read it back, and cringe so much that I would usually rip the pages out. 
So perhaps a weekly diary, a summary of my life and thoughts is best for me. And probably super boring for anyone else. So, enjoy I guess?

The past couple of weeks I’ve felt the need to really do something, make changes in my life, a sudden burst of motivation (which believe me, is quite something!). I’ve wanted to start a blog for years, but I just didn’t have the motivation or knowledge. But recently that changed, and I knew what I wanted to do. So after spending a couple of weeks attempting to research and learn about the blogosphere, I gave it a go.

And my god, I have absolutely no idea what I’m doing! While my research gave me some very basic knowledge, I’ve realised I am completely tech-illiterate. I have no idea how you guys who’ve been doing it for years managed it, but if you started in any position close to my own, wow, I salute you! This is hard! I’ve spent hours googling sollutions to the simplest of problems, and half the time I’m still wondering if I got it right. But I’m also loving it so far, I feel full of ideas, and I’m finding it hard to close my laptop at night to sleep. Well this is new! Actually enjoying work! 

The weather has been utterly disgusting this week, near constant rain and heavy winds. Typical british weather if we’re being honest. So naturally this meant I spent the majority of the weekend snuggled up in my onesie, eating. By the end of the week, the fridge is always tragically bare. And as the local supermarket shuts at 4pm on sundays, that means scraping together a meal from everything and anything that’s left in the fridge when you’ve got a hungry boyfriend to feed. Luckily I managed to put together a pretty decent (if I do say so myself) pasta dish with some leftover roasted red peppers and mozzarella cheese. Sometimes last minute meals come together so well, don’t you think?
